The Green Knight

Alternative Movie Poster

Red is the colour of passion; green, the colour of what passion leaves behind.

You know, they say there's nothing new under the sun, and the fact that a movie as acclaimed as this one is based on a poem written 6 hundred years ago is a testament to that! Epic themes! Knightly challenges! Beheadings! Honour! The Red Queen from that weird Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie before her head swelled up like a fucking balloon! And above all, Treebeard in the role that finally tapped into his (its?) dark side! This movie has it all!!

This design started as a study based on a photograph of Dev Patel. I needed to figure out some stuff in terms of rendering and to work on my portrait skills. However, the study was very well received and people asked me if I was going to make a full poster for the movie. And you know, as a foolish half-baked knight, right in tune with the themes of the movie I said “sure, why not?”

Since at that point I hadn’t watched the movie, I had to work out the composition and the rest of the elements based on the scarce reference images out there. It worked in my favour, I think, since it forced me to keep it simple, and simple is where I can work and build nice things.

Red vs. Green was only natural from the beginning, and it was only a matter of luck that the theme was so prominently spelled out in the actual movie.

As a test, I made a small 'print run for these, and later on, I expanded it with three small prints depicting the artifacts from the movie.
