Artifacts - The Goonies

Companion Prints

“Come on, guys, this is our time. Our last chance to see if there really is any rich stuff”

There are many awesome things about this movie. Many great moments and a lot of fantastic memories. But through all of them, there’s almost always something physical carrying the story. The bikes. The map. The doubloon. The key. The freaking Baby Ruth. The statue of David. And of course, the Skeleton Key. One of the coolest props to ever appear on film, to be used for a total of like 10 seconds. But where those 10 seconds great or what?

I really like the colours in these. Since The Goonies is such an optimistic movie, I wanted the colours to be really warm and saturated. That’s why I went with a bright blue background and really warm reds and rich purples. I also started pushing to the forefront the “sand garden squiggles” I’ve been playing with lately to bring some interesting areas into focus and to help with the transition between planes. I kinda like the way that looks, especially in some areas of the Skeleton Key.

Picking the subjects for these prints was not easy, but I decided early on that I wanted to save a space for Mikey’s inhaler. I mean, it’s not as glamorous or exciting as the other two, but I can hardly think of anything that more fully describes what a Goonie is, and that encapsulates Mikey’s growth, than the scene at the end when he tosses the inhaler away. It might have been medically irresponsible, but it’s a badass moment!

Also, as with the Pulp Fiction artifacts, I painted an extra one to send to those who order both the AMP and the Artifacts. And what better choice for that than The Junkless Hunk, The Gelded David himself? I always loved that part of the movie, and the statue works beautifully within the long, horizontal format of the bonus print.
